Santander, capital of the region of Cantabria, is located on the north coast of Spain, for many years known as the beach of Old Castile. The most common image of the city is the Magdalena, the palace where the royal family spent their summers until the year 1931.

Santander is a medium sized city (180,000 inhabitants). It is constructed on a small peninsula with the ocean on one side and a large bay on the other. It is recognized among the most beautiful geographical areas of its kind. There are seven sand beaches in the city, all waving blue flags ( European distinction for safe and clean beaches), which can be reached by foot, by bus, or by ferry. Public transport is very good with 19 different bus lines at a cheap price (5.40€ for 10 rides).
In Santander There is an Atlantic climate with mild temperatures. In winter it is usually about 10º C (50º F) and in summer upwards of 20º C (70ºF) with a light southern wind.

Santander has an intense cultural life. Over the course of the year there are concerts, opera, and theater in the Palace of Festivals. There are good exhibits and art galleries. In summer there is an international music and dance festival, considered, along with Edinburgh and Granada, to be one of the best in Europe.
A unique characteristic of Santander is the quality of its restaurants. For example in the centre of the city, there is a restaurant that holds the highest distinction, the Estrella Michelin, and there are many tapa bars where it is possible to try the best Spanish food for very little money. After eating well, there is a fantastic night life both in the bars and discos, and on the street.
